The RENHEW Approach
>Back in 2016 we were working with our friend and one time harmonious roommate to improve our Satisfaction and QOL. We came up with a brief QOL Screener of six (6) items. This is not to be confused with the OCHCA’s RENEW FSP.

Service Partnership)
Program Description: Project RENEW (Reaching Everyone Needing Effective Wrap) by Pathways of California serves Orange County children from birth to 18 years of age with serious emotional disturbance (SED)/serious mental illness (SMI), along with their families. The program focuses on children and their families who have been unserved or underserved, are and who may be homeless or at risk of homelessness. While the child is the identified participant, Project RENEW uses a Wraparound model, providing a team of individuals offering both formal and informal support to the entire family.

QOL and Family
Family involvement can play a significant role in the lives of older adults, providing emotional support, helping them maintain their independence, and improving the quality of care they receive.
QOL and Natural Supports
Natural supports, which are the relationships people have with family, friends, and community members, are crucial for improving quality of life (QOL), especially for individuals with disabilities. These supports foster a sense of belonging, independence, and empowerment, reducing reliance on formal services. Developing natural support networks requires time, effort, and open communication, but the benefits to an individual's well-being are significant and far-reaching.

Psychotropic Cocktail –
Polypharmacy
Psychotropic cocktail and polypharmacy in mental health. The term "psychotropic cocktail" is often used informally to describe situations where individuals are prescribed multiple psychotropic medications simultaneously, which is known as polypharmacy.
What is psychotropic
polypharmacy?
Polypharmacy in psychiatry is the concurrent use of two or more psychiatric medications for the same patient. This can involve using multiple medications from the same class, different classes, or using one medication to manage the side effects or enhance the effectiveness of another.
QOL and Mean People - A Catastrophic Loss Mechanism
Define Frenzy
(An example of) uncontrolled and excited behavior or emotion…there was a frenzy of activity in the financial markets yesterday. The town was in a frenzy about the shocking murders. In a frenzy of rage she hit him.
Frenzy in suicide
The phrase "suicide frenzy" likely refers to a state of intense emotional turmoil and confusion, rather than a literal frenzy of suicide attempts. It's often used to describe the disorientation and overwhelming feelings experienced during a mental health crisis, potentially leading to suicidal thoughts. Mental health conditions like depression, psychosis, and substance use can increase the risk of suicide.
Suicidal Ideology
What are the three components of
suicidal ideation?
This model delineates 3 distinct phases: The 'pre-motivational phase,' which focuses on background factors and life events that may trigger suicidal thoughts; the 'motivational phase,' due to feelings of defeat, entrapment, and lack of support suicidal ideations develop; and the 'volitional phase,' which is concerned ...Apr 20, 2024
Volitional Phase
The volitional phase refers to the stage of action where an individual consciously decides and initiates a course of action, often in response to a goal or intention. It involves the process of translating intentions into actions, including planning and overcoming potential barriers. This phase is crucial in understanding how people move from thinking about doing something to actually doing it.

National Institutes of Health

Abstract
This is a secondary analysis of three qualitative studies about MAiD in which researchers asked about the differences between suicide and MAiD. In all, researchers interviewed 52 Canadians; 7 were people who had requested MAiD and had been found ineligible, 6 were MAiD providers and 39 were socially and economically marginalized. The overwhelming response was that MAiD is better than suicide in the context of suffering at the end of life. Whereas these people perceived suicide as uncertain, difficult, and something that was usually done alone and without support, they thought MAiD was certain, painless, and more socially acceptable.
Picking a QOL Centered Assessment
- WHOQOL-Brief
The World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) is an abbreviated, 26-item version of the 100-item WHOQOL-100 quality of life measure. The WHOQOL-BREF addresses four quality of life domains: physical health, psychological health, social relationships and environment.
Why choose a Commercial
Off-the-Shelf (COTS) assessment tool?
Choosing a COTS assessment tool can offer several benefits, particularly in terms of time, cost, reliability, and support. In summary, choosing a COTS assessment tool can be a strategic decision to reduce costs, save time, leverage proven reliability, access a wide array of features, and benefit from vendor support and industry expertise, particularly for organizations with standard assessment needs and limited resources for custom development.
Why create your own Assessment?
Creating your own assessments, rather than relying solely on pre-made ones, allows for greater alignment with specific learning objectives, provides more relevant feedback, and empowers students through increased agency in the learning process. It also can be a way to gauge student understanding in a way that a generic test may not.
Assessment Custom Development
Custom assessment development refers to the creation of assessments tailored to specific needs and goals, rather than relying on pre-packaged, off-the-shelf solutions. This approach involves a collaborative process to design, develop, and implement assessments that align with unique organizational requirements, skill gaps, and desired outcomes.

Seeking to define quality of life or living a good life
Quality of life, or living a good life, is a subjective experience encompassing an individual's overall well-being, encompassing physical, mental, social, and emotional aspects, as well as their perception of their position in life. It's not solely about material possessions or income but also includes factors like health, relationships, personal fulfillment, and the ability to enjoy life's experiences.

Seeking to define quality of life or living a good life (2)
Quality of life, or living a good life, is a subjective experience encompassing an individual's overall well-being, encompassing physical health, emotional well-being, social relationships, and the ability to participate in and enjoy life events. It's a concept that varies from person to person and is influenced by individual values, expectations, and cultural context.
Feature - Two-Factors
–Associations & Correlations
In statistics, association is a general term referring to any relationship between two variables where patterns in one variable relate to patterns in another. Correlation, on the other hand, is a specific type of association that describes the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two quantitative variables.
Differentiating between quality
of life (QOL) and Satisfaction
While often used interchangeably or in relation to each other, Quality of Life (QOL) and satisfaction are distinct but interconnected concepts. Think of it this way: Someone might have a high quality of life (good health, secure job, supportive relationships), but still experience dissatisfaction in a particular area, such as their work, if it doesn't align with their aspirations. Conversely, someone with a less "ideal" quality of life (e.g., facing health challenges or financial difficulties) might still express high levels of life satisfaction if they find meaning and contentment in other aspects of their lives or have developed coping mechanisms.
Coping Mechanisms
Coping mechanisms are strategies individuals use to manage stress and difficult emotions.
These strategies can be conscious or unconscious, and they can be either
adaptive (healthy) or maladaptive (unhealthy). Coping mechanisms are essential
for navigating life's challenges and maintaining emotional well-being.

Differential QOL
“Differential QOL" refers to differences in how individuals or groups perceive and report their quality of life (QOL). This can be due to various factors, including individual characteristics, disease status, or cultural background. Understanding these differences is crucial for personalized interventions and accurate assessments of QOL.

Quality of Life and Living
Arrangements
Living arrangements significantly impact an individual's quality of life, particularly for older adults. While living alone, with a spouse, or with family all have unique impacts on different aspects of well-being, it's not always a straightforward correlation between living situation and overall quality of life. Factors like social support, meaning in life, and the ability to maintain independence play crucial roles in how living arrangements affect overall well-being.

Housing Centered Themes
Housing and Public Health
Housing and public health are intrinsically linked. Access to safe, affordable, and stable housing significantly impacts physical and mental well-being. Poor housing conditions can lead to various health problems, while adequate housing promotes better health outcomes.
Housing Developments
Housing development in California encompasses a variety of projects aimed at addressing the state's housing needs. These include new construction, redevelopment, and preservation of existing affordable housing, often involving collaboration between public and private entities. Recent trends focus on increasing density, particularly in urban areas, and streamlining the development process, including reforms to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
Where is Your GoodBed?
Your GoodBed is not a physical location but rather an online resource and information hub. Specifically, it's a website, GoodBed.com, dedicated to providing information and resources about mattresses and sleep. The site offers details about various mattress brands and companies, including contact information for those companies. Their mailing address is: 1459 18th Street, #273, San Francisco, CA 94107, according to GoodBed.
Skilled Nursing
Skilled nursing refers to a level of care that is provided by licensed healthcare professionals, such as nurses and therapists, and is typically needed after a hospital stay or for individuals with complex medical conditions. It encompasses a range of services including medical care, rehabilitation (physical, occupational, and speech therapy), wound care, medication management, and assistance with daily living activities. Skilled nursing care is often delivered in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), also known as a nursing home, but can also be provided in other settings like hospitals or even at home as part of home health services.

Sleep
Sleep Correlates
Sleep correlates, also known as sleep-related correlates, refer to the various factors that are associated with or impacted by sleep patterns. These factors can include physical and mental health, cognitive functions, and lifestyle choices.
Sleep and Health
Adequate sleep is crucial for overall health, impacting physical, mental, and cognitive well-being. It plays a vital role in physical health by helping to maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, and supporting the immune system. Furthermore, sleep is essential for mental health, reducing stress and improving mood, and for cognitive functions like memory and decision-making.
Sleep Data
Sleep data provides insights into your sleep patterns and quality, often tracked by wearable devices or smartphone apps. This data can include sleep duration, sleep stages (light, deep, REM), and metrics like heart rate and restlessness. Analyzing this data can help you understand your sleep habits, identify potential issues, and make adjustments to improve your sleep.
Health Partnerships
Health partnerships are collaborations between different organizations to improve health outcomes, often involving public health departments, healthcare providers, and community organizations. These partnerships can focus on various areas, including research, capacity building, and service delivery, and aim to address health needs in specific communities or globally. They can also involve academic institutions, private sector entities, and philanthropic organizations.

Innovation in health encompasses the development and implementation of novel ideas, processes, technologies, and services aimed at improving patient care and outcomes. This can involve advancements in various areas, including diagnostics, treatments, and healthcare delivery models. Key examples of healthcare innovation include telemedicine, artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnostics, and 3D printing of medical devices.
Things greater than us &
Spirit
While often used interchangeably, "spirit" can be distinguished from "soul." In some frameworks, the soul is considered the individual's unique consciousness and personality, while spirit represents the deeper, fundamental life energy that connects everything. The Holy Spirit in Christianity, for example, is described as being greater than any worldly influence and offers strength and guidance.
Seeking connection and meaning
The desire to connect with "things greater than us" and explore the meaning of "spirit" is deeply ingrained in human experience. This quest for meaning can be driven by a longing for purpose, a search for answers to life's mysteries, and the desire to transcend the limitations of individual existence. Recognizing a connection to something larger than oneself can potentially provide solace, strength, and a sense of belonging that enriches lives.
Managed Passing
End-of-Life (EOL) managed passing refers to the processes and protocols surrounding end-of-life care aimed at providing comfort and dignity to individuals during the last stages of their life. This encompasses a range of approaches and considerations within the healthcare system, particularly within hospice and palliative care settings.
Self-Sufficiency &
Partnerships
Self-sufficiency, in the context of human services, refers to a state where individuals or families can meet their basic needs without relying on external assistance. Partnerships, particularly in the form of public-private collaborations, play a vital role in facilitating this goal, offering a range of support services and resources.
Promising Practices
Promising practices are strategies that have been implemented in a community and have shown promise for becoming a recommended or standard practice. Apr 7, 2025
Health Technology
Health technology, or healthcare technology, encompasses all tools,
devices, systems, and processes used to improve health and healthcare delivery.
It includes everything from medical devices and drugs to digital health
solutions and organizational systems. The
goal is to enhance patient care, improve health outcomes, and increase
the efficiency of healthcare services.
Back to QOL Factors – Miscellaneous Items
Transportation and QOL
Transportation significantly impacts quality of life (QOL) by influencing various aspects of well-being, including physical health, social connections, and economic opportunities. Improved transportation systems can enhance accessibility, reduce travel time, and lower transportation costs, leading to increased mobility and opportunities for social engagement. Conversely, inadequate transportation infrastructure can create barriers to accessing essential services, limit social interaction, and negatively affect physical and mental health.
Limited Work Space
Limited workspace in an office, whether it's a small home office or a shared workspace, can lead to feelings of claustrophobia and inefficiency. Optimizing the available space is crucial for creating a comfortable and productive environment. This involves maximizing space utilization, using clever storage solutions, and even considering flexible work arrangements like hybrid work models.
Why even discuss QOL, housing and
sex?
Discussions surrounding housing and sex are relevant because these two aspects of life can intersect in significant and sometimes unexpected ways, impacting individuals and communities on various levels. Here are some key reasons why this discussion is important. Discussions about housing and sex are not simply about isolated aspects of life; they are intertwined and have profound implications for individuals' health, safety, relationships, and overall well-being. Examining this connection allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations and helps inform policies and interventions aimed at promoting housing stability and sexual health for all.

Affect versus Effect
The words "affect" and "effect" are often confused, but their usage is distinct. "Affect" is primarily a verb meaning to influence or produce a change. For example, "The weather affected my mood." "Effect" is typically a noun referring to a result or consequence. For instance, "The effect of the medicine was drowsiness." While "effect" can also be a verb, it's less common and means to cause or bring about something.
Elemental Analysis of Quality of
Life
An elemental analysis of Quality of Life (QoL) is an interdisciplinary approach that seeks to understand and measure the different components or "elements" that contribute to an individual's or a population's overall well-being and life satisfaction. It's a method that delves beyond surface-level observations to identify the fundamental factors that shape how people experience and value their lives.
QOL and Healthy Persons
Quality of Life (QOL) in healthy persons is generally higher than in those with chronic diseases, but the specific domains affected and the extent of variation can differ. Healthy individuals tend to experience better physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being compared to those with chronic conditions.

Quality of life (QoL) indicates individual’s perception of the
physical, psychological and social aspects of health. The association between QoL and all stressful life events
dimensions has not been investigated among industrial employees.
Conclusion
Results of our study indicated that life stressors have negative
impacts on QoL of employees. Personal stressors showed higher negative impact than socioeconomic on QoL. Managing
the stressors can play an effective role in improving the QoL of employees,
their physical and mental health, and indirectly enhances the organizational
performance and job productivity.

A systematic review of physical activity and quality of life and well-being.

by DX Marquez · 2020 · Cited by 141
Abstract - Physical Activity and
Quality of Life
Maintaining or improving quality of life (QoL) and well-being is a universal goal across the lifespan.
Being physically active has been suggested as one way to enhance QoL and
well-being. In this systematic review, conducted in part for the 2018 U.S.
Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Scientific
Advisory Committee Report, we examined the relationship between physical activity (PA) and QoL
and well-being experienced by the general population across the lifespan and by
persons with psychiatric and neurologic conditions.
Physical Activity Correlates
Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and pooled analyses from 2006 to
2018 were used for the evidence base. Strong evidence (predominantly from
randomized controlled trials [RCTs]) demonstrated that, for adults aged 18–65
years and older adults (primarily 65 years and older), PA improves QoL and well-being when compared with minimal or
no-treatment controls. Moderate evidence indicated that PA improves QoL and
well-being in individuals with schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease, and
limited evidence indicated that PA improves QoL and well-being for youth and
for adults with major clinical depression or bipolar disorder. Insufficient
evidence existed for individuals with dementia because of a small number of
studies with mixed results.
Physical Activity
Future high-quality research designs should include RCTs involving longer interventions testing different modes and intensities of PA in diverse populations of healthy people and individuals with cognitive (e.g., dementia) and mental health conditions (e.g., schizophrenia) to precisely characterize the effects of different forms of PA on aspects of QoL and well-being.

General Quality of Life
Overall quality of life is a broad concept that encompasses an individual's well-being, encompassing physical, mental, social, and emotional health. It includes both internal factors like perceived health and self-esteem, and external factors such as housing, community safety, and access to resources. A good quality of life is subjective and varies from person to person, but generally includes factors like health, relationships, work satisfaction, and a sense of purpose.
Sleep and Quality of Life
Adequate sleep is strongly linked to an improved quality of life, impacting physical and mental well-being, cognitive function, and overall happiness. Conversely, sleep disturbances, including insomnia and poor sleep quality, are associated with reduced quality of life, increased risk of health problems, and impaired mental and physical functioning.

Impoverished describes being really, really poor, either from having no money or being in bad health. A person who lives on the street is impoverished, and a country may become impoverished after a devastating war. You can use the noun impoverishment to mean "poverty," and also the act of forcing someone into poverty. A despotic government's impoverishment of its own people can be a way to control the citizens. A situation can also cause impoverishment, such as a serious illness and lack of health insurance.

Evidence-based Treatment
Despite increasing emphasis on the implementation of evidence-based treatments in community service settings, little attention has been paid to supporting the use of evidence-based assessment (EBA) methods and processes, a parallel component of evidence-based practice. Standardized assessment (SA) tools represent a key aspect of EBA and are central to data-driven clinical decision making.
SA Tools
The current study evaluated the impact of a statewide training and
consultation program in a common elements approach to psychotherapy.
Practitioner attitudes toward, skill applying, and use of SA tools across four
time points (pre-training, post-training, post-consultation, and follow-up)
were assessed. Results indicated early increases in positive SA attitudes, with more gradual
increases in self-reported SA skill
and use. Implications for supporting the sustained use of SA tools are
discussed, including the use of measurement feedback systems, reminders, and
SA-supportive supervision practices.

Evidence-based Assessment
Evidence-based assessment has received little attention despite its critical

Digital Preservation
Digital preservation is the process of ensuring that digital information remains accessible and usable over the long term, despite technological advancements and potential data loss. It involves actively managing and maintaining digital materials, including born-digital and digitized content, to guarantee their continued accessibility and authenticity for future users. Digital preservation experts emphasize the importance of strategies like file format migration, metadata management, and fixity checking to achieve this goal.

Wellness V Recovery V Righting
In essence, recovery is a personal journey towards a meaningful life with a mental health condition, while wellness is the encompassing state of being that recovery aims to achieve and maintain. The "righting reflex" is a common trap in supporting others, but resisting it allows for a more empowering and effective approach to facilitating both wellness and recovery.
Wellness
Wellness is a holistic concept encompassing physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being, not just the absence of disease. It's an active process of making choices and developing a lifestyle that leads to a state of optimal health. Wellness is often described as having multiple dimensions, including physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental. Prioritizing and balancing these dimensions can lead to a more fulfilling and healthy life.
Recovery
A recovery is when you save something that was lost, in danger of becoming lost, or retrieved. If something was taken from you, such as diamonds, money, or your dignity, and you get it back, you can say that you are glad for its recovery. The noun recovery also refers to a return to a natural or original state.
Mental Illness the Impossibility
of Recovery
Recovery is possible even though a person may continue to have symptoms or take medication for a mental illness at the same time, to get back to the medical definition of recovery, like not having any more symptoms or any more impairments, it certainly is possible. In fact, we know that people do recover from mental illnesses across the lifespan. For some people it takes many, many years. For other people, it can happen after just a few years or even a single episode or two.
Setting things Right (Righting)
"Set things to rights" is an idiom that means to restore something to its proper order, condition, or correct a mistake or problem. It can refer to physical order, like tidying a room, or to correcting errors, like fixing a broken item. It can also mean setting a situation right, like resolving a conflict or correcting a misunderstanding.

Fixed versus Solved
"Fixed" and "solved" both address problems, but "solved" implies a deeper, more permanent resolution, while "fixed" can indicate a temporary or superficial fix. A solved problem is likely gone for good, whereas a fixed problem might return.
Labile as a negative thing
Labile Definition - Negative
Labile might be define as of or characterized by emotions that are easily aroused or freely expressed, and that tend to alter quickly and spontaneously; emotionally unstable. In other words features that are liable to change or easily altered.
Quality Of Life
Elements - Housing
>We find housing problems are and have been Resistant to Solution. The process Find > Get > Keep has many gaps. A goal is to find a GoodBed that costs a reasonable amount of money relative to a consumer’s income. The bed should not cost more than 1/3 of the consumer's income. The GoodBed should promote: Sleep, healing and peace.
Good Bed
A good bed, or more specifically, a good mattress, is one that provides proper support for your body, allowing for spinal alignment and pressure point relief, while also offering comfort and a good night's sleep. It should be tailored to your individual needs, considering factors like your body weight, sleeping position, and any specific health concerns like back pain.

QOL and Healthcare Administration
and Regulation
Healthcare administration and regulation play a crucial role in shaping and maintaining the quality of life (QOL) for individuals and communities. Regulations ensure quality and safety standards, while administration focuses on efficient and effective healthcare delivery, both of which directly impact patient outcomes and overall QOL.
QOL Cluster
The QOL Assessment Cluster includes items associated with: Welfare, Health Outcomes, Housing, Satisfaction, and some Indicators of Life. We reference the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) operations as a model.
