20210423-F: Qualify Assignment -
First Question
>Is Keith Edward “Buster” Torkelson MS: Hungry or Malnourished? For all practical purposes he is not hungry. Yet, Buster has some unmet specific appetites such as periodic steak and eggs. He is a bit malnourished in that if he cooked for himself he would probably eat heathier foods. During this first year of Corona (COVID-19) Buster has been asked several times for donations to feed America’s hungry. He also has been asked for handouts by homeless people for what they say is for purchasing food.
20210423-F: World Wafers
>Even though we promote World Wafers as a fix for starving peoples in other countries, World Wafers applies to us at home as well. One of our mantras in the World Wafer Division (WWD) of Mentalation Solutions Group (MSG) is: “feed a hungry planet”. The hunger numbers indicate that the US is falling behind feeding its’ populous. Make note that epidemics/pandemics go hand in hand with famine and war. We promote World Wafers: To help curb the food insecurity in high risk areas such as those with disease and war. This is still the assignment to satisfy Dr. Calvin Schwabe’s request of his students back in 1987. The class was: The World Food Population Problem. Eventually we will publish this standalone report in our Blog.
Trends – Schwabe
>Back in the day when Buster frequented his professors during and around office hours he had the opportunity to ask some of his wild questions. On one occasion he asked a professor of Zoology, Kenneth Watt, where five risks our world faces in the future. Dr. Watt wrote them down on a piece paper giving it to Buster. Two risks on the list were global scale disease and situations such as war that will substantially kill off the male population.
Protein
Busters fix for the mass die-off
of males was let the females take over about warring situations. Males have been getting it wrong for too long. Back and even before the late 1980s Dr.
Schwabe declared a trend with protein from animals. He predicted that chicken
and pork would supersede beef consumption in America and possibly the world. Ten years ago circa 2011 Buster could buy
London broil on sale days at $1.99 per pound.
Currently (2025) London broil typically costs between $7.48 and $13.99
per pound.
Unit Farms
>A unit farm is a family owned farm that produces double that it consumes. With the remaining food stuff the family can trade (barter) with the other unit farms in the area. The closest one in Buster’s family for having a unit farm is older sister number 3. She even has her own water supply via a well.
Service Delivering Food
>Back in 1996 Buster did his tour of duty in delivering food. He was a USDA slaughter inspector. His forte was hogs. With hogs his primary service site was Farmer John @ Vernon LA County California. In one day his USDA team inspected over 6000 hogs. That means he was helping feed well over 6000 people per day.
Schwabe’s Omen
>In graduate school Dr. Calvin Schwabe was Buster’s teacher of Veterinary Medicine and Human Health – The World Food Problem. We his students committed to “Thinking global, while acting local” Dr. Schwabe predicted that over fishing would substantially deplete the Atlantic (AO) and Pacific Oceans (PO). For reasons we will not address he indicated that the Indian Ocean would remain viable after AO and PO depletion.
Salmon-Schwabe World Wafers
>Of particular interest is that “actionagainsthunger” reports for 2019 a: “Stunting (children too short for their age as a result of chronic malnutrition) fell from 33 percent of children under age five in 2000 to 21.3 percent in 2019.” That indicates that just over twenty (20) percent of children may suffer nutrition problems. Poor nutrition is associated with poor performance such as disease resistance and growth. A Dream is the North feed the South until the South gets back up on their knees. We used to call the medium of redistributing food World Wafers. Next we called it Schwabe World Wafers to give credit where credit is due. Now our final incarnation is Salmon-Schwabe World Wafers (MSG, 2021).
20210110-SUN:
Commitment – Calvin “Cal” Schwabe
Legacy – World Wafer Fixes
>When Keith “Buster” Torkelson MS, BS (honors) was a student of Doctor Calvin Schwabe in the late 1980s he committed to the movement: Acting Locally while thinking globally with respect to Public Health. At the time, Dr. Schwabe’s overarching mission appeared as grandiose. He indicated that his students and followers may have global impact by acting locally. This was before 1990 when the internet took off. Doctor Schwabe is considered by many of his contemporaries to be the “Father of Veterinary Epidemiology”. That is quite an honor! Malnutrition is a population and therefore an epidemiologic concern. “Cal” wrote and published at least three (3) editions of his groundbreaking work: Veterinary Medicine & Human Health. If you suffer your way partially through the book you know that it is substantial.
Redistribution
>Keith's early work in Poultry Nutrition as an undergraduate in Avian Sciences and later as a graduate student gave him keen insight into both individual and population nutrition. Adequate food for human health is still a huge issue on Earth. Once in lecture Dr. Schwabe discussed the North-South food imbalance and how it is up to the North (haves) to better feed the South (have not enough). Mentalation Solutions Group’s (MSG’s) idea does not deal with food distribution as much as what to re-distribute. The North might best create complete nutrition World Wafers and re-distribute them to the areas in both the south and patchworks in the north in need! The dividing line is the equator. Here we promote the Salmon-Schwabe World Wafers (MSG, 2021) concept.
Purified Diets – Lived
Experiences
>From 1982-1987 Keith “Buster” Torkelson participated in the: Calculation, formulation, creation, proximate analysis, distribution and tracking results about what the UC Davis Avian Science Department (AVS) fondly called “Purified Diets”. Many of the formulations yielded high performance in test populations of Aves such as Chickens and Japanese quail. In most incidences we were permitted to mix in only the highest quality ingredients. A good purified diet was mighty tasty as well as a bit tastier than pancake mix or cake mix.
Taste Testing
>It is now known that the dietary lipid or fat components’ flavor qualities are transmissible into the meat and eggs of poultry. Most of our concoctions appeared most similar to pancake mix. Almost every time we handled a new formulation we tasted it. Again, they were quite flavorful. We hope that “Feed the world” agencies are making progress on delivering about our World Wafer Notion (WWN). Aside: An Avian science success story about nutrition”. Tom Roudybush was a contemporary of mine in the Avian Science Department.

Fundamental Questions
"Who, what, where, when, why, and how" are a set of six fundamental questions used to gather information and provide a comprehensive understanding of a situation or event. These questions are often referred to as the "Five Ws and one H".
Who – The Malnourished
The terms "disadvantaged" and "malnourished" are frequently linked due to the profound connection between socioeconomic factors and nutritional well-being. Disadvantaged individuals, households, and communities, often marked by poverty, limited access to resources, and insufficient support systems, are at heightened risk of experiencing various forms of malnutrition.
Who - Helpers in food delivery
systems
In food delivery systems, helpers can broadly be categorized into those who assist with the physical delivery process and those who support the overall system's functionality. Helpers in the delivery process include delivery drivers/helpers who transport food from restaurants or stores to customers, and driver assistants who aid in loading, unloading, and securing items during delivery. System helpers include customer service representatives who handle inquiries and resolve issues, and dispatchers who manage the flow of orders and drivers.
Who - Those who create foodstuffs
Those who create foodstuffs include a wide range of professionals, from chefs and cooks to food scientists, farmers, and food manufacturers. They are all involved in the process of bringing food from its raw state to the consumer's plate, encompassing everything from growing ingredients to developing recipes and preparing meals.
Who – Prevent Kwashiorkor and
Marasmus in the children of the world
To prevent Kwashiorkor and Marasmus in children, focus on ensuring access to a balanced diet rich in protein and overall nutrition, alongside addressing underlying health issues and promoting good hygiene and sanitation practices.
What - World Food Population Problem
The World Food Problem encompasses the global challenge of providing adequate and nutritious food for all people, resulting in widespread hunger and malnutrition. It's not just a matter of quantity; it's also about access, affordability, and the nutritional quality of available food. Current estimates indicate that hundreds of millions face acute food insecurity, with millions more unable to afford a healthy diet.
Where – Where are the people
especially kids malnourished?
Tens of millions of children under age 5 suffer from acute malnutrition across more than two dozen countries and territories. Nutrition crises in Gaza, Mali and Yemen are among the most severe in the world. Hunger shocks are likely to persist amid significant reductions in humanitarian funding.
How - To Take a Bite out of Malnutrition
To combat malnutrition, it's crucial to ensure access to a balanced diet, focusing on nutrient-rich foods and addressing underlying health conditions. This involves promoting healthy eating habits, providing nutritional support, and tackling inequalities that contribute to food insecurity.
When
No time is better than the present to promote World Wafers as a fix for malnutrition especially in children
Why fix malnutrition?
Solving malnutrition is crucial for both individual well-being and global development. It impacts health, cognitive development, educational attainment, and economic productivity, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality. Addressing malnutrition can save lives, improve quality of life, and foster more prosperous societies.
Wafers
A wafer is a crisp, often sweet, very thin, flat, light biscuit, often used to decorate ice cream, and also used as a garnish on some sweet dishes.
Aside - Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is a young adult dystopian novel series written by Suzanne Collins, which has been adapted into a successful film franchise. The story is set in the nation of Panem, where teenagers are forced to compete in a televised death match called the Hunger Games. The series follows Katniss Everdeen, a young woman from District 12 who volunteers to participate in the games, and her struggle for survival and rebellion against the oppressive Capitol.
Why is the movie Hunger Games called Hunger Games?
The "Hunger Games" are named as such to highlight the dual meaning of "hunger": the literal hunger experienced by the impoverished districts and the metaphorical hunger for power, control, and vengeance held by the Capitol. The games serve as a brutal reminder of the Capitol's dominance and a punishment for the districts' past rebellion.
World Wide Food Distribution
World Wide Food Distribution refers to the global process and companies involved in the movement of food products from producers to consumers across various countries and regions. This includes international trade, logistics, and distribution networks. Several companies specialize in this area, such as Worldwide Produce, which focuses on fresh produce distribution in the Western United States.

Evolving Population Numbers
Number of starving in the world
In 2021, the United Nations estimated that 828 million people, or 9.8% of the world's population, were affected by hunger. This is an increase of 46 million people from the previous year and 150 million since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a UN report. The report also indicated that 2.3 billion people faced moderate or severe food insecurity.
Number of kids under-nourished in
the USA
In the United States, approximately 13.8 million children live in households experiencing food insecurity, according to Feeding America. This means these households lack consistent access to enough food for all family members to lead a healthy life. While not all children in food-insecure households are necessarily undernourished, it significantly increases their risk.
Maslovian Crisis
A "Maslovian crisis" generally refers to a situation where a large number of people are experiencing a severe disruption to their basic needs, as outlined in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. This can encompass a breakdown in the fulfillment of physiological needs like food, water, and shelter, as well as safety needs such as security and health. Such crises often highlight the interconnectedness of these needs and can trigger a cascade of negative consequences throughout society.
Population Crises
Several authors have explored the topic of population growth, but two prominent figures are Thomas Robert Malthus and Paul R. Ehrlich. Malthus, in his 1798 work "An Essay on the Principle of Population," famously argued that population growth would inevitably outpace food production, leading to widespread famine and misery. Ehrlich, along with his wife Anne, wrote "The Population Bomb" (1968), which similarly warned of the dangers of overpopulation and its potential consequences for resources and the environment.
Associations Population and
Famine
The association between population and famine is a multifaceted issue that has been debated for centuries. While a growing population can exert pressure on food resources, attributing famine solely to overpopulation overlooks the complex interplay of various factors contributing to food insecurity.
What percentage of the kids in
the world go hungry?
Retrieved 2025: Approximately 22% of children under the age of five worldwide experience stunted growth due to undernutrition. Additionally, about 45 million young children suffer from severe malnutrition each year. This means that nearly one out of every three children under five is affected. Furthermore, 1 in 5 children in the US experience food insecurity.
What percentage of the kids in
the USA go hungry?
Retrieved 2025: In the United States, approximately 1 in 5 children (or 20%) experience food insecurity, meaning they don't always have access to enough food to live a healthy and active life. This translates to roughly 13 million children in the US who are unsure where their next meal will come from, according to Feed the Children.
Origin of World Wafer Idea - Elf
food in lord of the rings
In "The Lord of the Rings," Elves consume a variety of foods, including the special Elven waybread called lembas. While often depicted as primarily vegetarian, eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, and berries, they also eat meat and drink wine. Lembas, in particular, is a highly nutritious and sustaining bread.
Formulation of Chicken Food
Chicken feed formulation involves mixing various ingredients to create a balanced diet that meets the specific nutritional needs of chickens, based on factors like age, breed, and production stage. A typical formulation includes grains (like corn and wheat), protein sources (like soybean meal and fish meal), and supplements (like vitamins, minerals, and amino acids).
Examples of Formulations
A simple blend
might include 50% maize or wheat, 21% soybeans, 14% bran, 8% oil press cake, 2%
fish and bone meal, 1.5% premix, 1% limestone, and 0.5% salt according to IITA.
Another example
includes 34kg of whole maize, 12kg of Soya, 8kg of fishmeal, 10kg of maize
bran, 6kg of lime, amino acids, 175g of premix, 70g of lysine, 35g of
methionine, 70kg of Threonine, 35g of tryptophan, and 50g of toxin binder.
A broiler feed
could include corn, soybean meal, wheat, oats, and fish meal.

Aside - Corona – Disease Complication
Corona impact is going to pop up in higher magnitudes. For example for every death there will be 10 times the sick yet survived. One-hundred time suffering Corona-related behavioral health issues. One-thousand times the dead suffering Corona-relate hunger. 10,000 times the dead injured in Corona related conflict. Etc.
Eating every Day
Eating every day is normal
and essential for survival. Humans need to consume food regularly to
provide their bodies with the energy and nutrients they need to function. A
medical website explains that consuming enough calories is crucial for growth,
development, and overall health. While overeating can lead to health issues,
eating daily is not inherently problematic.

Sep 4, 2024 - Hunger Quick Facts for 2023
Impact of Hunger
Hunger, or food insecurity, has profound effects on both physical and mental health. Physically, it can lead to weakened bones, muscles, and skin, significant weight loss, and increased susceptibility to illness. Mentally, hunger can cause mood changes, anxiety, depression, and difficulty sleeping. It also impairs cognitive functions, impacting concentration, decision-making, and overall productivity.
Insecurity
Food insecurity refers to the limited or uncertain access to adequate food due to lack of money or other resources. It's a household-level condition that can range from mild concerns about running out of food to very low food security, where individuals experience reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns. Hunger is a possible outcome of food insecurity, but not all food-insecure individuals experience hunger.

world
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates
that about 815 million people of the 7.6 billion people in the world, or 10.7%,
were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2016. Almost all the hungry
people live in lower-middle-income
countries. There are 11 million people undernourished in developed
countries (FAO 2015; for individual country estimates, see Annex 1. For other
valuable sources, especially if interested in particular countries or regions,

Fictional food and drink in
Middle-earth – Middle Earth Wafers
Most of the cuisine found in the fictional world of Middle-earth is real food from Earth history. Like lembas, it is probable that Tolkien modeled cram on hardtack, a biscuit. Like other products of the Elves, it is offensive to evil creatures; Gollum outright refuses to eat it, even when faced with starvation.”

Are there enough nutrients
stockpiled to feed the planet?
While the Earth currently produces enough calories to feed the population, a combination of factors related to food loss, waste, distribution, access, affordability, and the impact of climate change and conflicts prevent many people from accessing sufficient and nutritious food. Addressing global food security requires a multi-faceted approach, including reducing food waste, improving infrastructure, promoting sustainable practices, and addressing underlying issues such as poverty and inequality.
